What is a PLIF Surgery?
PLIF surgery is short for Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion. This procedure is a type of lumbar spine surgery from the back side that often successfully addresses spinal symptoms with chronic pain in the lower back due to a problem with the discs. A PLIF surgery consists of removing the damaged disc, adding spacers between the vertebrae, adding rods and screws to rebuild correct spinal lordosis and stability, and growing bone between the vertebrae above and below to stop motion and fuse the segment in place.

At ONZ Spine, we only perform PLIF surgery as a last resort after exhausting all other possible motion preservation surgical options such as Artificial Disc Replacement or Facet Joint Replacement.
